Making Tax Digital

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has published a series of consultation documents outlining further plans for the Government’s Making Tax Digital initiative.

The measure is intended to create a ‘transparent and accessible tax system fit for the digital age’. The consultation documents reveal that businesses and landlords with an annual turnover of less than £10,000 will not be required to produce quarterly reports or record information digitally. The Government also stated that it will consider delaying the start of Making Tax Digital for a further group of small businesses to give them extra time to get used to digital record keeping and quarterly updating.

UK Interest rates cut to record low

The Bank of England (BoE) has cut UK interest rates from 0.5% to 0.25% – the lowest level in the Bank’s 322-year history.

All nine members of the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously backed the cut, which is the first since 2009.

Upon the news, the pound fell sharply against the euro and the dollar.

New Chancellor Philip Hammond rules out emergency Budget but hints at policy change

In his first media appearance as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond has effectively ruled out an ‘emergency Budget’ following the Brexit vote. However, he did hint at a possible change in the direction of the Government’s fiscal policy, suggesting that the Autumn Statement later this year could contain significant measures.
